Also at my work in Barton 2 magpie lark chicks were fledged yesterday. And I have seen at least 3 nests with chicks over the past couple of weeks. My workmate was swooped multiple times by a magpie lark near Old Parliament house 2 weeks ago. I agree with Con and others, I think they are second round youngsters.

 

The magpie lark swooping the woman seems to have ritualised the behaviour. So I would carry out different behaviour to try and break the ritual. Some suggestions are to stop running that route for at least 3 days, to go with 2 other people, to walk not run, to try and change body language- be more relaxed, look at things (like flowers) or change height, or ride, or take a horn. Something to confuse the bird and put it off guard/distract it and help it forget the ritual. Magpie larks are very determined but with many animals if you can stop the behaviour from happening for 3 or so days then the ritual can be broken, especially early on.
