Abstract :

How do you value an ecosystem service?

If wetlands are the ‘kidneys’ of our rivers, then what is the economic value of the filtration service they provide?

A new study from Adelaide University addresses these questions. The study places an economic value on the water filtration service that wetlands provide, and shows the cost to society of wetland destruction.  The results show that the methodology used to value an ecosystem service really does matter, and that new policies are required for ecosystem service protection.
