Hello All
Two quite different matters in this message:
* I am having my garden open in Australia's Open Garden Scheme again - this time, in a moment of foolhardiness, I decided on January (no challenge in opening in spring .... ). So, we will be open at the below address on 19-20 January - listing in the Open Gardens booklet (in newsagents & bookshops etc) on p. 43 . I'll be grateful for any material related to bird-friendly gardens, etc etc (membership forms, advice, plant lists, etc). If sent electronically I can print out copies for visitors. I will send around a notice again in early January. (The opening will financially support Amnesty International).

* I'm heading off to Fiji next week for a singing workshop, but I note that the Daku Resort is also running a bird watching week next April with Robin Mercer - details below and attached. There was not much on Robin in the material sent to me, so I found the following on the web:

What We Will Experience
Birdwatching in Fiji offers the opportunity to see a number of tropical birds in the beautiful natural habitat of Fiji. We?ll take trips into areas noted for specific species of bird, and we?ll also use the extensive land of Daku Resort where we are staying. As well as many more common Fijian birds such as the reef heron, the kingfisher, the shrikebill and the honey eater, we will also set out to see the orange dove and the silktail, both of which are to be found on our island, Vanua Levu. In fact, the orange dove has been spotted on the estate of Daku Resort itself. No particular fitness is required but it is necessary that you are steady on your feet as we will be walking on some narrow paths in rainforests.
Course Tutor
Robin Mercer has lived in Fiji for 60 years, and knows the area around Savusavu and the island of Vanua Levu intimately. He was District Officer for the province of Cakaudrove for many years, a position of considerable responsibility. He has led a number of birding trips over the years, for both groups and individuals. During the week he will be taking you to a number of areas of noted bird spotting potential.

cheers
Barbara Preston
