Mathew, not sure whether anyone has replied off
line but in my experience the eyebrow markings are the best diagnostic feature
for young bronze-cuckoos. Even in its palest version (ie hardly no barring
and a very dull green/brown back) look for the Horsfield's white eyebrow
(supercilium) with the dark line/stripe through the eye, whereas the
Shining certainly lacks the latter and usually has some barring,
including on the throat/face, though it might be very light. If you
get a good look the rufous outer tail feathers in the Horsfield's is the key and
absolutely diagnostic feature, indeed another name for this species is
the Rufous-tailed Bronze-Cuckoo.
The above experience is mainly based on my
experience with young/immature birds but it is consistent with HANZAB.
