I followed up Benj's report of Great Crested Grebe on Lake Ginninderra
at 0700 today and it was a case of the early birder getting the bird. Only saw
one grebe while standing on the lakeshore retaining wall behind the H2O police building. It was preening in the water
about 30 metres offshore. After five minutes, it turned its head through 180
degrees, burrowed its bill down into its dorsal plumage and appeared to visit
the sandman. I looked unsuccessfully for the other grebe then had to leave as
the grebe continued its somnolent bobbing out on the water bed.
