Like so many bird names adopted from Europe to
Australia for somewhat similar though unrelated birds, shrike and magpie etc are
not and have nothing to do with our birds.
Our butcherbirds look and behave a bit like shrikes
but are not closely related. Our Magpies as far as I can tell are nothing like
European Magpies (apart from being black & white and about similar size).
European Shrikes are not European Magpies or even closely related to them.
However our butcherbirds are closely related to our Magpies. Yes "piping shrike" is an old South Australian name for the Australian
Magpie (just to confuse us).
