Chip You have accurately described Fusc HE. Yellow gape indicates eclipse plumage or first year bird. The plume is less conspicuous than for example that of a White-plumed HE. In terms of similar species WP HE is the closest of the "local HE species" (tho' the definition of local HEs has been turned on its head this year). WPHEs are less drab in colour with quite yellowish faces. cheers Richard
Hello all. I was at the ANBG today and saw two honeyeaters feeding together. They were very drab birds, mostly dirty white underneath with olive-brown upper parts. There was a hint of yellow on the primaries. Both had a dark eye. Both had a small, black smudge on the neck and one had a yellow gape. I could not, however, detect the yellow neck feathers in either bird. Near as I could tell, they were Fuscous honeyeaters but the lack of yellow neck feathers had me going. So, my question is, "Can it be difficult to see the yellow neck feathers on the Fuscous honeyeater? Are there confusion species that I've overlooked. Thanks for the info. Chip Scialfa p.s. The Crescent honeyeater was at section 191. ******************************************************************************************************* This is the email announcement and discussion list of the Canberra Ornithologists Group.
