I should have been
clearer
The Ngarigo tribal
area occurs S of Molonglo River from Yarralumla/Queanbeyan past Cooma to almost
the border. Then West into mountains to Tumbarumba.
Ngunnawal tribal
area occurs North from Yarralumla, to Yass, East to Goulburn, S to Molonglo River. I think that is right. There is
another less known tribe with an area
West of Ngunnawal (Tumut) maybe
related to Ngarigo.
Clans had an area
within this, each clan had a totem. It is thought the ‘tablelands/highland’
tribes (above) had similar languages because words overlapped.
Reading the book is so sad
because there are records of brolgas, bustards (many around Yass/Boorowa), emus,
koalas, giant crayfish (1kg), and waterbirds so thick the sky turned dark. Not to mention all the small marsupials and grassland
species of plants.
As Ian says, the
totem names are early lawyers/interested explorers/settlers (Europeans)
interpretations of Aboriginal names/explanations. That is interesting in
itself.
