Hi Charmian

Did anyone reply to you about this?

It looks to me as though the birds are sunbaking, which is one method of getting rid of parasites from under the feathers.

Cheers

Anthony

Subject: [canberrabirds] Query re peewit behaviour

Hi

I was going through some old photos last night and found these I took eighteen months ago. We had a peewit family in the garden having been the product of a nest in a front gum tree. The father brought the young birds down to our fish pond where they sat with their wings extended as in the picture. They hadn't been in the water and it looks like some sort of defensive pose though there was no threat that I could see (and they couldn't see me). The only other thing I could think of was perhaps they were sunbaking but it would have been very hot at the time.

So I wondered if anybody has any ideas about what they were doing?

Thank you

Charmian Lawson
