Interesting!

This sounds similar to a technique used by astronomers to produce
colour images, and for the same reason. They combine a long
exposure unfiltered ("panchromatic") image with shorter exposure
red, green and blue filtered images to "tint" the unfiltered image,
not unlike the way analogue colour TV applies a low resolution
colour signal to the underlying high resolution black and white
picture.

The key difference with the new sensor chip is the different
image components are taken simultaneously rather than sequentially.

The technique is something of a compromise/fudge, so it will be
interesting to see if the image quality is good enough to be
adopted in "prosumer" digital SLRs.
