Further to earlier observations below. Red wattlebirds are still (10-11 June) migrating north around Ulladulla. Flocks of 20 to 50 totalling 100s rather than 1000s per day. Also smaller silent HEs (ie not YFHEs) moving north (probably WPHE or Fuscous HEs).

cheers
Richard

Having just spent a fortnight near Ulladulla I also observed large flocks of Red wattlebirds going north.
They commenced around the 22nd April and continued all day, rain or shine, for 6 days. I guess around 5- 10 thousand passed over me in that period. Flock size averaged around 80 with some as large as 200. I was surprised to see them flying in the rain.

Down the coast fewer YFHEs were moving by the 22nd. Lots of Fuscous and a few WPHEs were also on the move.

Back in Canberra I saw a flock of 50 Red Wattlebirds flying past the Mint in Deakin yesterday morning. Today I saw a few (3) WPHEs around Curtin.

cheers
Richard

Re: [canberrabirds] Red Wattlebird Migration [SEC=PERSONAL]

I had a similar experience about a fortnight ago at Princetown (on the Great
Ocean Road - west of the Otways in Victoria) - the flock I saw was well in
excess of 500 - and was preceded and followed by smallers flocks of 20s or
so. They appeared to be heading west along the coast away from the Otways

A truely amazing sight - even the group I was with (who were not
birdwatchers) were impressed.
