There were two Egyptian Geese at the zoo about 3 weeks ago – maybe there is just one now.

G’day again John,

I keep forgetting about Google as a source of pictures of various birds – just goes to show I am not a great computer literate! As for the Egyptian Goose locally I don’t know of any records from the region so perhaps the COG Records Officer could enlighten us as to any records. It is one of the species that appears to be popular in Europe and as I said previously, I saw it feral in southern England a few years ago but I don’t know of any in collections in this part of the world. Perhaps the National Zoo and Aquarium has (had!!) some.

Anyway glad to be of help.

Cheers,

mark

Hi John,

Just a suggestion but do you have a book that shows the Egyptian Goose? Most of your description, except for the possible buff coloured ring (how obvious?) around the neck, fits the EG pretty well.

Brilliant Mark! I just googled up some photos of the EG, and that's defiinitely what we saw. The picture here: http://wildflowers-cdrom.com/birds/birdpics/Egyptian_goose.JPG
is the closest likeness to what we saw today. So, is this something that's often seen around Canberra?

Thanks muchly,
John Brannan
