By coincidence I think I found the same fungus - certainly looks
similar and almost the same size - at ANBG. Although the bite marks
are smaller you can see what was eating this one ...

Might give you a clue as to yours. They don't look edible at all but
maybe they are delicious. This bird stayed pecking away for about a
minute, maybe a bit more.

Noela and I did the Swift Parrot/Regent Honeyeater survey this
weekend at our usual sites, various TSRs in the Tarcutta area.
Dipped on the target species, no flowering, no lerps, lots of dead
and dying trees, both box and stringybarks. Bird abundance far lower
than usual, ditto re species diversity. The good news is that the
Brown Treecreeper population is holding on at Kyeamba TSR, even tho
abundance appeared lower than usual.
What we did see, at Posts TSR which is on the Old Tarcutta Road
where once I got Swift Parrots, was this very large fungus on the
side of a River Red Gum, you can see its size in relation to Noela
standing next to it. Of interest was that something had been eating
on it. No stock on the TSR, and probably too high for them anyway.
It had many neat bite marks, each around one centimeter in size,
perhaps a little more. A small amount had fallen to the ground, but
most had been neatly bitten off and removed, presumably ingested.
What is this fungus called, please, and any suggestions as to what
has been feasting upon it?
Thanks - David
PS no, this is not a quiz!
