For those of a literary bent - do read The Story of San Michele (1929) - the memoires of Axel Munthe a Swedish physician who made his dream home on the isle of Capri. Horrified at the killing of migratory song-birds, at his death the bird sanctuary of Mt Barbarossa (some 5500 sq metres) was made over to a Swedish foundation which maintains it to this day. Fascinating stuff.
