At 7 o'clock on Saturday morning (April 28), I was waiting at traffic
lights in drizzling rain on the intersection of Southern Cross &
Coulter Drives, Belconnen. Suddenly, during the few moments when no traffic was
crossing the intersection, a pair of Pacific Black Ducks spiraled down out of
the overcast. The leading duck lowered its landing gear and its feet
made contact with the wet bitumen. I could almost hear it cry Ouch! as
it fled skywards followed by its mate.
Early one morning, in March 1995, we witnessed a small flight of ducks
(dunno what kind) make a similar faux pas on a rain-slicked blacktop road in
rural Illinois. A local told us she'd often seen migrating ducks apparently
mistake wet roads for stretches of water.
