Yesterday wasn't so good at Angle crossing/Smiths Rd But on Saturday
Field Naturalists visited Angle crossing/Smiths Rd and although we
didn't do a formal count, at Smiths Rd the number of honeyeaters was
high and I estimate at least 2000 passed through in 2 hours. This was a
conservative estimate. Most people thought a lot more. There were flocks
every 5-10 minutes with 100- 200 birds in each. Bigger flocks than last
year and more frequent. Mainly yellow faced and white naped. A few white
eared, one yellow tufted. A few each of eastern spinebills, and white
napes, 1 fuscous. I know I forgotten some.
Also 20 little ravens flying south.
At least 4 wedgies
A hobby was harassing the honeyeaters for about half an hour, and 1
peregrine flew through later.
Interestingly, by 11:30 it was quite hot and numbers dwindled
dramatically.
Angle crossing had 7 dusky woodswallows.
Tharwa sandwash had mainly silvereyes and a few honeyeaters. 3 speckled
warblers were seen and a diamond firetail was heard. Brown falcon was
seen.
It is surprising how much difference a day makes.

I went to Warragandra where we usually see the honey eaters migrating in
very large numbers, on Saturday. I stayed in the vicinity from
9-11.45am.
I was disappointed in the number of honey eaters that flew through. And
the ones that I did see appeared to be confused as to which way they
should go, although eventually heading east. Maybe I just did not stay
long enough. There were a couple of flocks, 6 and 10 wattle birds
heading east.
The highlight of the morning was seeing a rufous fantail near to the
homestead. Also magpies were harrassing a wedgetail eagle not far away.
How did the survey to Smith's Road and Angle Crossing get on yesterday?
