Could this be similar to the way humans block out familiar noises?  We used to live in Brighton SA close to a railway line, a station, and a level crossing which involved much blowing of hooters on the trains.  The noise of the regular diesel passenger trains between 5am and 12pm never registered with us.  However when the Historical Society ran a steam train, with a stem whistle, it almost deafened us.

Here's a question for your deliberations (please) from an observant Mt Rogers walker this morning.

Presumably Sulphur Crested Cockatoos don't deafen themselves with their own screeches.  Would the way they fly &/or their aural structures prevent self-deafening?
Perhaps they have selective hearing?

Thanks
Rosemary
