McKellar Wetlands duck ID

Can someone assist me in identifying a duck that I observed this morning (8.30) 
on the pond on the western side of William Slim Dr at McKellar?  It was 
generally dark brown to black, but with a white chest.  The leading edge of the 
primaries also seemed to be white.  The bill was dull grey.  It was slightly 
larger than the Black Ducks with which it was swimming, and its neck was also 
longer.  I can't find anything like it in my field guides.

On the shore of the pond I also saw a pair of Black-fronted Dotterels.
