The Southern Boobooks I spotted in Chauvel Circle last week are at this moment on the power lines and in the gum in Darwinia Tce, right in front of our neighbour's house, making their very loud cricket-like trill and hawking for insects in the light from the streetlight. I just wandered out there and got a very good look at the two of them. I didn't hear any other calls so assume there are only two. One of them, at first sight across the street, flew over and nabbed what looked like a praying mantis or stick insect not two metres from my head while I watched, and then perched in a low branch of the neighbour's gum, giving me a very close look.
