Yesterday I was surprised to see Purple Swamphens walking on the surface of Lake Tuggeranong, sometimes up to about 10 metres from the waters edge, facilitated by a layer of mud deposited from the heavy rain on Sunday evening.  Occasionally, when they would walk across an area where the mud wasn't thick enough to support their weight, they would sink into the water and have to extricate themselves back to the surface or swim back to the edge of the lake.
