Telling male Leaden from Satin Flycatchers isn't normally an issue (and
habitat alone is a pretty good clue locally, except during migration).
The attached was in the NBG this arvo and steadfastly refused to turn
side-on. The blueness of it had me fooled - it shouldn't be a Satin
there and now, and it's not really dark enough, but....
HANZAAB assured me it is a Leaden, for a reason I hadn't been aware of,
and which none of Pizzey and K, Morcombe, or Simpson and Day show.
Apparently the 'convex' line of the breast (ie curving down in the
middle) is diagnostic, and opposite to that of Satin. Anyway, I thought
it was interesting and worth risking boring all of you who already knew
that, in case there are others apart from me who didn't know it.
Hope your 2007 has started well.
cheers
Ian
