Narrabundah, Tuesday
Our Street Peacock is about to bring up 12 years continuous residence in the
street, longer than half the rate- or rent-paying incumbents and longer,
continuously, than anyone or anything else.
When I walked out the front door yesterday, a pedestrian asked me (as many
do) who 'owned the peacock'. The reason was that he'd just seen SEVEN
peacocks crossing La Perouse Street to the alternative Rocky Knob. I
strolled down there, but the scene was pretty well peacockless.
If my informant was reliable and assuming the phenomenon was
seasonally-connected, the possibilities seem to be -
At a nearby peacock holding, due to the holidays -
a) the peacocks were not fed, and took matters into their own hands
b) the inexperienced relief peacock handler negligently left the gate open
or
someone intended a gift of peacocks for their true love and the peacocks
escaped either
c) before
d) during
e) after
the presentation or
f) at a more distant peacock holding, an adventurous band of peacocks
decided that Christmas 2006 would be their time to see the wider world,
something they had always wanted to do

Subject: Peacocks in Narrabundah
In the driveway/parking areas of our complex today at noon (Christmas day)
on Jerrabomberra Ave were two peacocks (i.e. male) wandering around looking
healthy and not stressed, but a little out of place. I had to go out, so
gave them water and mixed seed just in case, neither of which seemed to
interest them. They weren't particularly wary, but not entirely tame
either. Needless to say when I got back they were gone. I wonder if this
incident is related to the Brockman St Narrabundah peacock that turned up
and stayed 10(?) years ago.
Happy Christmas,
Julian
