This morning (18 Dec.) the 2 male Black Honeyeaters
still present.
In the same area: 3 pairs of White-browed
Woodswallows (only one appeared to have a nest); a total of 41
Superb Parrots (in several groups & additional birds only
heard) between 7.50 and 9.05 h, all flying E/NE); small groups of Little
Lorikeets passing, a total of 15.
More interesting a wave of around 20
White-winged Trillers; at one time 10 males and 3 females
on the ground in a small patch of open country (+ 2 Tree Martins and 1
Horzefield's Bronze Cuckoo) and further Trillers in nearby saplings and
older trees; also the resident male standing on a nest. These Trillers are
another example of "birds on the move" earlier than normal (when they
still should be breeding), most likely drought-induced movements.
Good breeding success for Australasian
Grebes: a pair with 3 fully grown young on a dam close to the
display signs (at a neighbouring dam only 2 adults) and a pair with 5 young
(less than half adult size) on the big dam.
