Jumpin Jerra!
Missed today's Jerra Draft Managenment Plan on-site launch as mentioned by
Ian Fraser though nearly launched myself in evading a very large Brown snake
between Bittern and Cygnus hides at 115pm. Goes without saying that snakes
are prevelant in this habitat, especially at this time of year, though this
specimen impressed with its size (est 5-6 ft) and the speed at which it
departed through the thick grasses. One could be a 'good little person' and
stick to the hides at this time of year though there are 'known' trails
around Kelly's swamp that afford closer (potential) viewing of crakes and
rails, etc and the temptation is often too great. My only assurance today
was that I was carrying a thick elastic bandage and a mobile phone so please
take care when snooping around Kelly's swamp and Jerra in general. Other
large Brown snakes have been sited at either end of the wooden bridge lately
and obviously can pop up (or down) anywhere with the myriad rabbit burrows
etc around the place.
My apologies for stating the obvious, esp to any experienced bird
watcher/naturalists out there, though today I lost my nerve a little,
similar to when one has a bad air flight with flying, and Im not sure how
regularly in future I will frequent these 'secret spots' around Jerra on
very hot days.
Thanks
Stuart Harris

Just back from the on-site launch of the Jerra Draft Mngt Plan (which, for
what it's worth, provides a good sound base to work from). The mud is fast
appearing (at last!) and the launch was closely attended by 3 Spotted and a
Baillon's Crake, Glossy Ibis and Royal Spoonbill, inter alia.
Should be worth watching in coming weeks.
cheers
Ian
