It is unusual but certainly not unknown. I suspect HANZAB would list cases of aviphagy by magpies. The one I recall as the biggest bird prey taken was an Eastern Rosella. There is the additional quite unusual aspect in what you describe, of potentially a cooperative approach. This is well worth writing up in CBN.
