There seems to be a fair degree
of difficulty in identifying the species of corella that fly around Kingston
etc. Two birds seem to be clearly long billed corellas, while the rest are a
little more dubious. They appear to have features in between long billed and
little corellas, to varying degrees, some seem more longbilled some seem more
little.
I have visited WA recently on a
few occasions, and wonder if the birds we are seeing may actually be Western
little corellas (Cacatua sanguinea westralensis).
They may even be Western corellas
(Cacatua pastinator).
This is not out of the question
as I know of western corellas that have been imported into ACT. If the ‘wild’
corellas originally came from Mugga zoo then it is possible.
Another option is just that long
bills have been hybridising with little corellas, resulting in birds which look
half way in between.
