Some thoughts. Yes quail often flush before they are seen. I think Painted Button-quail can be seen walking a bit more often. I've only seen Red-chested & Little Button-quails in flight. I recall in 1981 near Katherine in central NT being with a whole bunch of birdos at dawn waiting for the Gouldian Finches to arrive (they didn't) but Hooded Parrots and others sort of made up for it (not really). All the people were hiding under whatever cover was available. I watched about 10 Brown Quails walk single file down to get a drink and walk back up the edge again. On one of the Nanangroe trips I was in the back of the car and Malcolm Fyfe in the front. One Brown Quail walked up to the car and Malcolm dropped his hat out of the window onto it but the bird walked away as his hat floated down.
