I went for a short stroll on the Kambah side of Mt
Taylor on Saturday. Without trying at all hard, I encountered copulating Galahs
(going for a surprisingly long time, they were at it when I noticed them and I
think I'd strolled 100 metres before they stopped), Crimson Rosellas displaying
at and inspecting a tree hollow, Buff-rumped Thornbills nest building (although
I did not find the nest). The latter within about 10 metres of where I found the
Weebills building a nest two weeks earlier. The Weebills' nest was gone by
the next Sunday, although Harvey Perkins saw them on the Saturday. There were
Weebills all over the place and being very vocal. The same sort of thing is most
likely going on in a Canberra Nature Park near you. Also at my house the
Australian Ravens and Pied Currawongs have started the annual battle, that
usually lasts a few weeks, as to which is going to own the big tree in my yard
to nest in. If any I hope the Ravens win.
