On Friday at the coast we walked on unmarked trails to find Lake Nargal, a
freshwater lake between Narooma and Mystery Bay on the eastern side of the
highway. We saw a female swamp harrier fly up from the reeds beside the
lake, leaving behind a newly killed purple swamp hen. When we returned an
hour later the bird flew off from the same spot. In that time it had
devoured the swamp hen leaving a pile of feathers and a small uneaten
portion.

We also saw the male bird, searching for prey some distance away.
