Today I had the opportunity to raise this issue in the field with
someone partly responsible for the boxthorn removal program. So I did.
They are aware of the habitat value of the boxthorn and are accordingly
going to leave the dead plants in situ. This should be effective for a
while, but of course they will eventually break down. There is little
problem getting them replaced on the Kelly's side of the road, ie in the
nature reserve, but there is probably least need for it here given the
existing plantings. Across the road is more problematic, both in terms
of lack of other cover and the different management authority (ie ACTEW).
COG cttee may wish consider a couple of approaches, since as Terry
points out, we are an organisation with some credibility and authority.
A letter to Brett McNamara, Manager West District Envt ACT, c/- Namadgi
would be appropriate, as would I think a direct approach to ACTEW,
perhaps emphasising the discrepancy between their PR approach in
welcoming birdos, and the loss of habitat. (Having said that, I'm
certainly not advocating retention of boxthorns or other envtl weeds.)
cheers
Ian
