Well, Gang Gangs were much in evidence at the ANBG at around 4.00-4.45pm today.  The most I saw at any one time were 6, but there was definitely quite a few more than that in the gardens.

Unfortunately Pink and Rose Robins were not in evidence….dipped again L

It does not look good, but I did not want to suggest another informal survey in light of experience with the previous one.  I still have the figures from that.

Instead I have been keeping my own log starting 19/05.  Since then –

-          None have been heard around where I live, most unusual.

-          On 7 visits to ANBG I have only heard them 3 times – probably 3 birds or less

-          The hawthorn trees in a Griffith Street that are usually stripped by mid-May, still have fruit, now over-ripe.  On half my visits there I have found feeding Ggs but at most only two pairs.  This contrasts with 10-40 birds in previous years.

Against that, the historical record shows that the non-breeding peak is variable, so perhaps we shall see larger flocks in the course of winter.

Where are all the Gang Gangs.

David and Geoffrey have both mentioned this.

Barton- The previous 7 years I have always had between 3 and 6 gang gangs every day at Barton this time of year, but have seen none.

ANU- while looking for the Blue faced honeyeater at ANU over 3 days, I saw only 2 Gang gangs in the whole time. Usually there are dozens.

Botanic Gardens- On thursday over 3 hours observation only saw 2 for about 15 minutes. Usually there are at least 1 dozen.

Westbourne woodlands- I would have expected to have seen some there, but nada.

Aranda bushland- Usually 3-6 but havent heard any.

Macquarie/Aranda suburbs- Usually they are always heard this time of year, but havent heard any.

Where are they? It is a bit of a worry
