three rainbow lorikeets spent about an hour in one of my large eucalypts this
morning (Saturday). Have never seen them in my garden (close to Wanniassa
Hills Primary) in the past. appeared to eat a few lerps, but spent most of
their time preening before moving on, in the direction of the bushland between
Wanniassa and Farrer.
had seen lots of them in Brisbane earlier in the week, on a business trip which
allowed me a few hours in the City Botanical Gardens, where I got my first look
(being a novice birder) at a buff banded rail - one of the staff pointed out a
likely spot, and sure enough a rail dashed across the path only a few feet
away, between the heavy undergrowth on both sides, then a rather braver one
appeared in another area of the gardens, coming to within about 5metres of
where I was sitting on a lawn area before deciding to bolt back to cover again.
Close encounter with a grey butcherbird there - obligingly sat on the park
bench beside me while I fossicked for the bird guide in my haversack to be sure
I had the right ID.
