Ah, yes, I was about to recall the same
little chap (of 98/99), which used to skulk on the margins of the feeding mob,
although it clearly held a special place in the affections of the Van Lady who
would never fail to loft a crust or two in its particular direction.
However, I sense that Marnix’s researches have carried him further back
in time and that he is exploring the late 1980s, the heyday of the Plumed Whistling
Ducks of Turtle Creek. I am afraid that if I ever knew where that was I have
now forgotten. If Marnix ever finds out, I would be grateful to be allowed
to share the secret although I scarcely dare hope that the Plumed Whistling Ducks
are still there.

Turtle Creek
Marnix (et al),
I haven’t heard of
Turtle Creek, but I do know that several years ago now (probably latish
‘90s) there was a single Plumed Whistling Duck that hung out with other
ducks, and particularly Black Swans, at the point where Jerrabomberra Creek
enters the lake. This is also where the “Bread woman” would unload
a van-full of bread on a regular basis. I think it was there for somewhere
between one and two years. My recollection is that the general feeling was that
the PWD was probably one that escaped from the National Zoo and Aquarium rather
than a properly wild bird.
Don’t know ifthis
helps you at all…

Turtle Creek
Can anyone tell me where in the COG Area of Interest 'Turtle
Creek' is?
I was reading an old ABR and found a record of Plumed
Whistling Ducks at Turtle Ck. The grid reference pointed to somewhere within
Jerrabomberra Wetlands.
Cheers
Marnix
