Kelly's
I realised later that Kelly's wasnt completely dry yet
as i overstated in my email, but surely at least 50% of the big pond is dry, as
the 19 Black-fronted Dotterels and 4 Masked Lapwings were 'walking' on the
Azolla/mud.
Cheers
Marnix

[canberrabirds] Kelly's

This
evening I sneaked out when my computer wasn't watching to visit
Kelly's just pre-sunset. I must confess to, very
atypically, disagreeing
with Marnix re his assessment of Kelly's. It's
still full of water but
it is entirely covered with Azolla, giving a most
misleading impression.
I had the advantage of having dabbling ducks
scattered all over it,
swimming (and sometimes wading!). Mud is certainly
appearing and I don't
doubt M will be right soon enough; hopefully some
scattering waders
might visit before that happens. There is still
water to the head of
Crake Alley, so we've got a little while yet.
CA seems
like the place to be. At least 2 and probably 3 Spotless Crakes
seen, though sporadic calls suggested a few
more than that, feeding
with 3 snipe. A brief appearance by the/a Lewin's
Rail.
cheers
Ian
