A gaggle at the Bot Gardens and three on the golf course in Narrabundah
this week are the first I have seen in Canberra in 6 months at least (but
from other posts that just shows I haven't been looking). A friend
tells me that she has seen several in inner Sydney near the airport in
the past few weeks (which is near a golf club too). So do YTBCs
have a town/country cycle even in non-post-bushfire times? Julian (bird novice, but I do know a black cockatoo when I see one! My father used to shoot red tails in arid far north Queensland in less enlightened times, because they were shredding our only tree. Until the local cop turned up on the doorstep and asked him to desist. I am not sure if this was because they were protected even then (about 1958), or only because he was worried about flying bullets in the middle of a town of 8000 people. Either way, I envy those comparatively simple times, when nature was only something to be tamed. (Not because it was right, but because things were much less complicated.)) They are the first I have recorded for my GBS chart this year (ie recording year, since July 2005). I also heard some, but did not see them, somewhere over Lake Burley Griffin near the Yarralumla Yacht Club about 0900 this morning. This is not far from my home and may have been the same pair.
