Rhonda and I just spent a long weekend in Tasmania. While it was not a birding trip
we did take binoculars but left cameras at home. Predictably under such
circumstances we came across an amazing sight. On a freshly ploughed paddock
near Poatina in northern Tasmania
late on Saturday we came across a flock of 60-80 Banded Lapwings (I counted 61
in the main group but there were others scattered across the paddock). I have
on many occasions in Tasmania
seen large flocks of Masked Lapwings but never such a concentration of Banded.
Usually you will see a pair and the largest group we had seen was five about
three years ago.
