Dear All,
The house sparrow used to be very common at my home in Mackenzie St,they dissapeared about 5 years ago....The chaps I accommodated had no troubles building nests in the eaves of my house, they easily access this area by squeezing thru the 22mm rib on the bottom tile at the gutter, and even more easily on the ragged breaks in the tiles at any valleys you may have. So there must be some other reason for them chosing tree hollows. The summer resident Currawongs were a scourge to my sparrows, they used to wait above the lower tiles having marked a bird going in,grab him on the way out.I note that the George Harcourt Inn spags are alive and well, four years ago, there were a couple with rich chestnut crowns, that resembled the Italian house Sparrow, they seem to have melded into the current group.
                          Terry Gourlay.
