I checked the fashionable venues late yesterday
before (actually slightly during) the shower and this morning. None at
Macquarie Oval. Many still at the empty car-parks behind DIMIA
etc This morning I counted 30 in one tree and estimated well over 100 in
the general area. They were feeding on lerps, lerps and lerps.
Mainly but not only in the more compact round-leaved eucs which I think are Red
Box and most of the leaves of which have many quite small lerp
scales.. On the other hand the more open-branched eucs provide the main
perching, gathering and resting stations. The juvs are doing
learning-feeding but the lerps seem to require a
skilful technique so the juvs, try as they might, need to be
frequently topped-up by the adults. It is noteworthy that many birds of
other species, mainly wattlebirds and friarbirds, are also attracted to the lerp
abundance. At one point a group of 6 superbs descended to drink at a
rain-water puddle.
