I went out to Macquarie oval 3 pm today to see if I
could get my first fair dinkum look at Superbs. I had almost completed a
circuit (in the process being buzzed by a Wagtail and listening to a Koel
calling in the distance) when I heard and then found a female or juvenile in a
tree near the school. It flew off towards Lachlan St and landed
directly above my truck. Just as I arrived back for a closer look
another 5 birds (ignoring the first one) flew across the oval to where I had
just left, then veered off and landed in a silver birch tree in a back
yard. I only had the pocket binos, but it appeared the lone male was
nibbling on the silver birch seed pods. It then made beak to beak contact
with a begging (presumed) juvenile so I guess it was feeding the young
one. I know from observations at home that Crimson & Eastern Rosellas
and King Parrots have many a hearty meal on these pods, so why not
Superbs?
Cheers
