Yep, sighted a/the Square tailed Kites at numerous locations around
Tomerong/Vincentia (Jervis Bay area) between Xmas and New Year. Had
observed this species at similar times and location on previous two Xmas/NY
stays in the area. Of special interest this time was discovering some
interesting birds in recovering heathland tucked behind a sporting/pool
complex at Vincentia which locals assure me is earmarked for major
development, ie Stocklands plaza and some 400+ residential dwellings.
Taking a plunge into this tick infested area was worth it when one is
literally (at times) surrounded by Beautiful Firetails, Tawny crowned HEs,
Southern emu Wrens and Musk Lorikeets to mention but a few. Photos of the
Firetails will be forwarded to our Photo Gallery shortly and a consolidated
list of species observed will be forwarded to some mob down there that is
protesting against the development.
Happy New Year to all
Stuart Harris
PS Anyone planning to visit/return from Jervis Bay/Nowra etc is hereby
advised that the Nerriga Rd is in the best condition I have seen it for the
last ten years or so. Some work is occuring along to route though no
indication of the major development touted in recent times. Adhereing to
the speed limit one can take the gradual climb from the Princess Hwy at
Tomerong to Braidwood in a comfortable (if not at times dusty) 1hr 20-30
minutes through what at times is magnificent country, well recovered from
the extensive fires that ravaged the area in 2001-2002.
