Tom and others,

Herewith the more notable obs from Kelly's this morning 2 Jan., 8.30-10.00, and one from last week:

One Tringa sandpiper, from Cygnus hide. I thought Marsh Sandpiper rather than Greenshank. Slender build, long legs, bill dark and straight, rather than upswept, upper legs seem to have a tinge of greenish yellow. Very light underparts and forehead. Dark grey wings. It was feeding busily near three BW stilts, which shooed it away when it came too close. I would welcome corroboration of the ID, since it’s been years since I saw either Marsh sand. or Greenshank.

Also 2 Freckled Duck, 2 Spotless Crakes, a dozen Pink-Eared Duck, a dozen Shoveler.

On Christmas Eve there was a Nankeen Night Heron present.

And my mother reported a Koel calling for an hour in Duffy yesterday 1 Jan. 7.00-8.00 a.m.

Subject: [canberrabirds] Kelly Swamp

Hello Everyone,

COG has a walk at Kelly Swamp next month.
I would appreciate reports of any interesting birds seen there between now and then.
This morning there were 4 Latham's Snipe at their usual roosting spot at the school end and a pair of stilts with a juvenile in attendance.
One pair of Masked Lapwings but no small plovers.
Good range of waterbirds on ponds 4 & 6 at the sewerage works.

Best wishes for the coming year
Tom
