The following letter appeared in today's Canberra Times:

Bust may follow boom

Comment accompanying the delightful picture of a black swan and its cygnets indicates that the breaking of the drought was probably the reason for this season's breeding boom among Lake Burley Griffin's birds (CT, December 21, p1).

However, the forthcoming boom of power boats on the lake may well seal the doom of any future breeding boom.

Say, that second paragraph sounds kinda poetic, don't it?

At the expense of stirring the proverbial marsupial with the prehensile tail a bit further, I note jet-ski aficionados recently held a trial on Lake Burley G in preparation for a future race meet there. Apparently, the jet jockeys were most impressed with the venue.

As I suspected, the water skiing trials may have been the thin end of the wedge.

And another thing to keep an eye out for, every so often someone raises the possibility of Lake B.G. being a potentially good spot to operate amphibious aircraft ....

John Layton.
