I would say the bird is a male not a female
unless it is a young female. 2 year old females have much more rufous and black on them, it could be a first year female but the most likely explanation is a male

This afternoon, while gardening, Mary Gorman flushed what I think is a Painted Button Quail in our Aranda backyard. I managed to snap this less than perfect shot of it when it fled to the compost heap and took an interest in a pasta box. It seems to want to hang about the garden, even though the Blackbirds harrassed it.
