Hi!
Philip, didn't it cross your mind that instead of
the O,B, Oriel doing the mimicking it could have been the Wedge-Tailed
Eagle, in a role reversal, doing the mimicking. This is not a common
occurrence and I believe not much of a success. I'm not sure
but I think its the size differential that gives the game
away.
Cheers Bob Rusk
Ps. Just a thought Philip, you did take note of the
size of the bird.?
Pss. It didn't give the impression that it was
extra-ordinarily close while the background seemed so far away ? that's
just a little tip to watch for when witnessing mimicry.

Cockatiel heard at ANBG
Hi Folks,
I heard a Cockatiel at ANBG during a brief stop
there late on Saturday afternoon (in the section below the cafeteria). I even
clearly watched it calling but it wasn't. I knew it wasn't before I saw it.
The Cockatiel calls were coming from an Olive backed Oriole, interspersed with
usual oriole calls and mainly Crimson Rosella and other unidentified presumed
mimicry. Nothing odd about that. It is just worth mentioning to highlight
that this is a species whose call it probably learned some considerable
distance away. (Years ago I once had one in my garden mimicking Wedge-tailed
Eagle and Sacred Kingfisher calls.)
