Hi you all,
The other week I wrote to the Canberra Times regarding the water
skiing trials on Lake Burley G but they never published it. Undaunted, I
sent it to The Chronicle and it appears in the current issue - October
25, p.20. If you like it, show your friends. If you don't like it, make some
enemies and show them.
For those who don't read The Chronicle, consider your wrists
soundly smacked, and read on, Macbirder:
Ideas
EDITOR
PLANNERS searching for ideas to enliven Lake Burley Griffin, in addition to
the mooted introduction of water skiing, should refer to some of the proposals
from yesteryear viz:
– A canal be constructed from the airport through Jerrabomberra Wetlands to
the lake enabling visitors to be whisked by water taxi to the Acton jetty from
where they can proceed by more mundane means. As a result, native waterfowl will
vacate the wetlands, but bolder, more adaptable feral geese and ducks will soon
fill the void so birdwatchers will still have plenty of stuff to look at;
– A chairlift should be installed from Yarramundi Reach to the summit
of Black Mountain. A sure-fire winner with tourists, this project would see
another Battle of Black Mountain reminiscent of the one fought some 35 years ago
when plans for the present Telstra Tower were released. However, after the
chanting and the banner-waving, the scoreboard will read as it did in the case
of the Gungahlin Drive Extension: Stanhope Government 10, Environmentalists
0.
But what of those anachronistic folk who love Lake Burley Griffin just the
way it is? Well, it's time for them to take a sea change. They can relocate to
another Australian city which has a jewel in it's crown the equal of Lake Burley
Griffin – if such a place exists.
