The most recent record of a Barking Owl endorsed by the COG Rarities Panel

I have just come onto this mailing list and thought this worth
noting.
On Tuesday night, 13th September, my wife at our house in Oconnor and
her daughter living about half a kilometer away both reported hearing a
strange owl calling during the night. They described it as a double call
like a Boobook, with which they are familiar, with similar timing, but
sounding more like "whoo whoo" to one and "whoof whoof" to the other. I
am familiar with most of the owl calls but unfortunately did not hear it
as my wife did not want to wake me. Just as well as it only called once
at our house!
It seems to me it was very likely a Barking Owl. I would be
interested to hear if anyone has heard a Barking Owl around Canberra in
the last few days.
         George Guy.
