Hey all,

Yes, I noticed they had made it to the Botanical gardens by at least Sunday. Are they “invaders”, or “normal” migrants, as I found it nigh on impossible to get a good snapshot as the Wattle Birds were in absolute over-drive trying to protect their food source, chasing these guys CONSTANTLY! If it wasn’t the Wattle Birds, it was the New Hollands who didn’t seem to like these new kids on the block.

Best I could do was this:

Although I must confess I was primarily trying out a (new) flash for the first time too.

BTW, you COG guys have got to stop tagging so many birds around the gardens. I finally got a snap of some little tacker after some 20 minutes tracking him from one spot to another, and then when I zoomed in on the LCD, he looked as though he was barracking for about 9 football clubs simultaneously! ;^) Same happened for a poor, bedraggled looking Superb Fairy Wren I snapped few weeks ago.

Of course that was only a joke BTW; please don’t take offence. 8^) Keep up the good work!

Over the last 3 hours, hundreds of YFHEs have gone through my backyard.  You
are only a few blocks away and if you are home you must be seeing some of
this wash.  The strong winds are keeping them low, so they are swarming
through the trees and shrubbery - down to ground level.  They are feeding on
green silver birch catkins.  (See typical feeding snaps taken by my back
door a few minutes ago.)  Numbers are impossible to estimate.  They have
been about continuously for 3 hours although every now and then some get
moved on by the wattlebirds (actually I think the wattlebirds have given up
now).  An hour ago I would have given numbers as 300+ but there have surely
been more than that and they are still coming.  A few rusty-sided silvereyes
are mixed in with them. The direction is mainly east to west, but that might
be a purely local trend dictated by the veg.   g
