After sending my last email, I was reading other books and noticed that Simpson & Day mention ventriloquism.  I spent several minutes looking for the "second" bird becasue I could hear sounds coming from two sites.  But the apparently more distant sounds correlated with the bird's throat movements.  So I put it down to my faulty hearing, but S&D confirm my observation - the bird was ventriloquising some of the calls.
