Hello COG type folks,

Just a quick note to say that Rai and I have been greatly enjoying Canberra’s bird life and that we found the first COG meeting most interesting; the two talks on raptors and the Jackie Winter were great food for thought. I only hope that the point was made to the relevant authorities about the value of not destroying the raptor habitat with short sighted urban sprawl.

Thanks also to Stuart for making us feel welcome by getting us started with a few good spots and a couple of useful pointers.

Also, for those who might be interested, I thought I would mention that I have been going nuts on the photography front, and have put together a groovy little web site slideshow of some of the best shots to date.

Highlights would include some very close-ups of a (please correct me if I am wrong; only beginners here after all) :
  • Striated Pardalote
  • Eastern Thornbill
  • Yellow Faced Black Cockatoo
  • Eastern Yellow Robin
  • Flame Robin (not as close, but pretty nonetheless)
  • Kookaburra (a common bird to be sure, but a very handsome specimen in this case)
  • many more besides...

If you like metal ‘birds’ too, there is also an “Air Show” section with a slideshow of the Victory in the Pacific celebrations last weekend.

If you are interested in taking a look, just click on http://www.macattack.com.au then click on ‘Birds’ or ‘Airshows’ or whatever takes your fancy (as there are lots of photos to load, if you only have dial up internet, you will have to be very patient).

Finally, we are going on holiday to the Otways in Victoria soon, and we would really appreciate some COG advice about what we could hope to find down there and where to look for it.

P.S. just a reminder that if you have a generic e-mail address with Hotmail, Yahoo etc., your e-mail may bounce, but I will look through the logs, add you to the ‘Friends’ list, then let you know when you are clear to send again...

Cheers,

James and Rai
