Well, one technique is as below.  Apart from that, different birds have different spaces to which they will allow an approach.  The space is bigger - and usually increases - if you follow the bird, but can be much less if the bird takes the initiative.  Cisticolas are inquisitive little birds and if you quietly position yourself near veg where one is concealed and make a generic 'tzwicky' noise there is a good chance it will appear quite close to take a look for a few seconds. 
 
Speaking of closeness, while orienteering this am I came across a wombat, sunning itself outside a burrow, which allowed me to pass within 5m without moving.
